A Simple Guide to Avoid Repairs This Season
By Rob @ Direct Overhead Doors – Family Owned & Operated in the GTA
Winter in the GTA is no joke. Cold snaps, sudden thaws, ice build-up, and slush can all take a toll on your garage door especially if it’s older or hasn’t been serviced in a while. A stuck door or broken spring almost always happens at the worst possible time… usually when you’re late, freezing, or carrying groceries.
The good news? A few simple winter maintenance steps can save you hundreds of dollars in repairs and keep your door running smoothly all season long.
Here’s what every homeowner should do before the deep cold hits. You can also review Government of Canada winter safety tips to help keep your home protected during extreme cold.
🔧 1. Lubricate All Moving Parts
Cold weather thickens old lubricant and causes metal components to stiffen.
You should lubricate:
- Hinges
- Rollers
- Springs
- Tracks (lightly, don’t over-apply)
- Bearing plates
Use a garage-door-safe silicone or lithium spray.
A quick spray every few months helps prevent grinding, resistance, and mid-winter breakdowns.
🧹 2. Clear Snow & Ice from Around the Door
Snow packed near the bottom of your door can freeze overnight and cause:
- Doors sticking to the ground
- Weatherstripping ripping
- Doors going off-track
- Motor strain or failure
Always clear snow a few inches away from the bottom of the door.
If it freezes shut, don’t force it open this can snap springs or burn out your opener.
🛑 3. Test the Safety Reversal System
Your door should automatically reverse if it hits an object or detects something blocking the sensors.
Test both:
Photo-eye sensors
- Wipe off dirt, condensation, or salt spray
- Make sure both sensors have aligned blinking lights
- Nothing should be blocking the beam
Force reversal
- Place a small object (like a block of wood) under the door
- Close the door
- It should reverse immediately after contacting the object
If it doesn’t? It’s time for a service call.
🌡️ 4. Check Weatherstripping for Gaps & Damage
Your bottom rubber seal and side seals are your first defence against:
- Cold air
- Rodents
- Salt
- Slush
- Higher winter heating bills
If the rubber is cracked, stiff, or pulling away from the door, replacing it is quick and inexpensive.
Good weatherstripping can help your garage stay 10–15 degrees warmer in the winter.
🔋 5. Replace Weak Remote & Keypad Batteries
Cold weather drains batteries fast.
If your opener feels “sluggish,” the first fix is often a quick battery swap for:
- Remotes
- Keypad
- Smart wall panel (if applicable)
A dying battery can also confuse the opener into thinking there’s a system fault.
⚙️ 6. Inspect Springs & Cables (Do NOT DIY This Part)
Springs lose tension faster in the cold, and winter is the most common time for them to snap.
If you notice:
- A loud bang
- A gap in the spring
- The door feels extremely heavy
- The opener struggles to lift the door
Stop using the door immediately.
A broken spring is dangerous always leave this repair to a trained tech.
🧼 7. Remove Salt Build-Up on Panels & Tracks
Road salt gets dragged into garages and eats:
- Steel panels
- Tracks
- Hinges
A quick wipe-down every few weeks can dramatically extend the life of your door.
This is especially important if your garage is heated.
🔍 8. Listen for New Noises
Your garage door should open smoothly.
If you hear:
- Grinding
- Squeaking
- Clicking
- Rattling
These sounds are usually early warnings of a part wearing down. Fixing small issues now prevents expensive repairs later.
